Honeymoon cystitis can occur when a woman has sex for the first time, or when a woman has sex after a long period of time without any sexual activity. During sex, E.coli bacteria which tend to live on the skin around perineum / anus can be transferred to female through penis, female urethra being short 4 cm only so bact have an easy access. Recurrence is not uncommon if initially not treated The symptoms are the same as with cystitis triggered by something other than sex: i.e. burning sensation when the frequent urge to go to the bath. Honeymoon cystitis is when cystitis occurs after not having sex for a period of time.Honeymoon cystitis is more common in women in their 20s . One can partly avoid honeymoon cystitis by staying hydrated, urinating right after sex, and keep her immune system strong. Once frequency dysuria commences she should send the midstream urine for culture and sensitivity and then initiate antibiotics. Antispasmodics at earliest. One can treat honeymoon cystitis with antibiotics which will normally clear most infections within 3 days(Amoxicillin or Furadantin)
