Asthenozoospermia

                     Asthenozoospermia

This is defined as seminal sample showing less than 50 percent of sperm showing progressive motility with all other parameters being normal. Isolated Asthenozoospermia is seen in 20 percent of infertile population.

One must make sure that the sample has been seen soon after ejaculation and adequately collected in a sterile container.

Cause of Asthenozoospermia may be congenital or acquired. A) Infections,  B)  varicocele,  C) presence of immobilizing antibodies, D) chemical toxins can all cause asthenozoospermia. Some of the E) morphological abnormalities of the sperm may be associated with reduced motility like Kartageners syndrome and short tail syndrome. By and large fertility specialists recommends IUI in such cases though mitochondrial medicines may be advised , But so far as cost effective is concerned IUI is a better option failings which ICSI-IVF< may be advisable .
