Uterus- its innervation

Innervation of uterus , labour pain in particular :-How important is damage to T 10-L-1 segment of spinal cord(not bony vertebrae)? Ans: The body of the uterus is supplied by sympathetic fibres from T10–L1 via the superior hypogastric plexus, whilst the cervix is supplied by parasympathetic fibres from the sacral region (S 2–S 4).. Labour pains are therefore referred to areas of skin supplied by these nerves, e.g. lumbo-sacral region, lower abdomen and loins. The pudendal nerve (S2,3,4) supplies the vagina and pelvic outlet.

Parasympathetic fibres of the uterus are derived from the pelvic splanchnic nerves (S2-S4). the cervix is supplied by parasympathetic fibres from the sacral region (S2–S4). The cervix is largely innervated by the inferior nerve fibres of the uterovaginal plexus.
The afferent fibres mostly ascend through the inferior hypogastric plexus to enter the spinal cord via T 10-T12 and L 1 nerve fibres.
